Zirconia Porcelain in Dentistry
In traditional dental restorations, metal substructures were used under porcelain for durability. However, the disadvantages of metal substructures—on gums, dental tissue, overall health, and especially aesthetics—led to the search for alternatives. By applying zirconia, which had previously been successfully used in other medical fields, instead of metal in dental porcelain, a new era began.
Zirconia-based porcelain restorations stand out among other dental materials due to their mechanical strength, biocompatibility, and fracture resistance. They do not cause gum problems or allergies, and their light-transmitting properties allow us to achieve aesthetics and function close to natural teeth.
Crowns and bridges made by applying porcelain over zirconia are commonly referred to as CERCON, a short form derived from the combination of the words Ceramic and Zirconium.
Applications of Zirconia
In cases of severe discoloration (caused by antibiotics, fluoride, etc.) or hereditary tooth discoloration where whitening methods are ineffective
For patients with previously prepared teeth, crowns, or bridges
Closing gaps between teeth (diastema) without orthodontic treatment, using metal-free zirconia or porcelain
For patients with existing metal-supported bridges or crowns
Restoring fractured teeth to match adjacent teeth naturally
Restoring teeth with discoloration, old fillings, or significant material loss
Correcting misaligned or crooked teeth (as an alternative to orthodontic treatment)
Restoring root canal-treated teeth with excessive material loss where fillings are not possible
Procedure Steps
Stage 1: Local anesthesia is applied, and teeth are prepared. Impressions are taken. Temporary restorations are placed to maintain aesthetics and prevent sensitivity until the next stage.
Stage 2: The zirconia framework prepared in the laboratory is tried in to check gum fit.
Final Stage: The aesthetic trial is performed. Before cementation, one or two sessions are held to verify that the pre-prepared mock-ups match the desired tooth color and shape and fit your teeth and facial structure. The entire process usually takes 5–9 days.
Why Zirconia Porcelain is Successful
The main reason for the success of zirconia porcelain is its high resistance to pressure and fractures. In dental applications, the most important feature of porcelain is its ability to withstand chewing and biting forces. Another key feature is its highly aesthetic appearance, closely resembling natural teeth. Zirconia porcelain allows light to pass through, giving a natural tooth-like appearance.
