What is Whitening (Bleaching) and How is it Performed?
Tooth whitening is the process of removing discolorations that occur in the structure of the teeth (enamel and dentin layers). Currently, there are two known whitening methods. The first is a method that the patient can apply on their own, with the following steps:

The dentist takes an impression of the mouth and prepares thin rubber trays that fit over your teeth.

The patient places the whitening gel into the custom tray and wears it over the teeth to be whitened for at least 6–8 hours a day (preferably while sleeping).

The treatment is usually completed within 1–4 weeks.

The second method is in-office whitening performed by a dentist, applied as follows:

The whitening agent is applied to the teeth by a dentist experienced in this procedure.

A blue/green light source is held over the treated teeth for a certain period.

The result is immediately visible after the procedure.

Both methods are effective, but the choice depends on the degree of discoloration, how quickly you want the treatment to be completed, and the dentist’s recommendation.

Why Do Teeth Develop Unwanted Stains?
There are many possible reasons. The most common include aging, consumption of staining substances (coffee, tea, cola, cigarettes, etc.), trauma, old prosthetics, veneers, and fillings. Antibiotics (tetracycline) or excessive fluoride intake during tooth development can also lead to discoloration.

Discoloration can result from the tooth structure itself, staining from external factors, antibiotic or fluoride intake during development, aging, or trauma to the tooth.

Who Can Have Their Teeth Whitened?
Almost everyone! However, there are some cases where the treatment may not be effective. Your dentist will determine if your teeth are suitable for whitening after a full oral examination. If your teeth are healthy, whitening is an ideal solution for a brighter, more natural smile.

Is the Whitening Procedure Difficult or Troublesome?
No! Thanks to advances in oral health technology, your teeth can be whitened safely and effectively in a short time.

Is It Safe?
Yes! Studies show that tooth whitening is highly effective and safe when performed under the supervision of a dentist. Teeth and gums are not harmed in any way.

Do Teeth Return to Their Previous Color After Whitening?
Teeth will always remain whiter than before. However, depending on your habits and oral care, a maintenance treatment may be needed once or twice a year.

In Summary, What is Important for Successful Whitening?

The brand and composition of the whitening agent

Being treated by an experienced dentist

Proper use of the whitening agent and following the treatment schedule

What Will I Have to Endure During Treatment?
If you smoke, you should avoid smoking while wearing the tray (for at-home whitening). You may experience mild sensitivity to hot and cold, which disappears after the treatment ends.

How Long Do Whitened Teeth Remain White?
Teeth whitened with different bleaching methods can remain white for several years, but this period varies from person to person. Eating and drinking habits, smoking, and brushing routines affect how long teeth stay white.

It should be noted that bleaching may not always achieve the desired whiteness. The degree of whitening depends on the initial shade of your teeth and varies from person to person. Therefore, you should discuss your expectations with your dentist beforehand.

Although tooth whitening (bleaching) is commonly applied in general dentistry, it actually falls under the field of Esthetic/Cosmetic Dentistry. Many people find a smile with white teeth very attractive. Generally, baby teeth are whiter than adult teeth. As people age, their teeth gradually darken due to changes in the mineral structure of the enamel. Teeth can also be stained by bacterial pigments and tobacco use.

Since white teeth are associated with youthfulness, they are highly desired by those seeking an esthetic appearance. However, excessive whiteness is often not esthetic. A natural tone that suits your facial and oral structure is always the most esthetic.
